Our Constitution is Flawed? Really, Barack?

There's a "new" old recording of Barack Obama making the rounds today. In 2001, Obama was recorded while giving a radio interview on Chicago Public Radio. In this now controversial interview, Obama talks about deficiencies in our Constitution.

You'll hear Obama pontificating on "injustices" inherent within the Constitution, including in his own words how "generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties...says what the states can't do to you, says what the federal government can't do to you...but it doesn't say what the federal government or the state government must do on your behalf". So much for "Ask not what your country can do for you - Ask what you can do for your country".

In the first minute of the audio, Barack Obama spends some time hailing the many accomplishments of the civil rights era (as we all should!). Segregation and slavery are the darkest and most regretful periods in our nation's history, and Barack pays proper homage to the civil rights movement. However, he takes it much further - even beyond the suggestion of reparations. Obama makes the assertion that during that period, the Supreme Court fell short in it's efforts, because they "never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth".

Please take a listen to the audio of Barack Obama in 2001:

  1. This is very disturbing. I'm mystified how people can say Obama is not a socialist. This tape proves it.

  2. This election has me simply baffled. I don't understand how - a week away from the election - we have a candidate for President that has the positions and beliefs that he has - and he is leading in the polls.

Our country has grown and flourished because individuals have come to American to work hard, knowing that they can get ahead. But somewhere along the way, this appears to have changed. When did we become a country of individuals striving to be rich to a country of individuals who despise and resent the rich? We now have a Presidential candidate that believes that those that work hard and prosper need to "share" and "spread the wealth" with others.

While I truly understand that there are some individuals in our society that cannot survive without the help of family, friends, or perhaps a government safety net. It is hard for me to imagine that the number of these individuals are dwarfed by the number of folks who simply do not want to contribute their fare share.

We all face challenges. Women don't earn as much as men. Blacks don't earn as much as whites. With the immigration issues we have face today, hispanics are often left to feel like unwanted members of our society. Life is not fair. We can't legislate fairness. We can't pass laws that make everyone "equal" in either their contributions to society or what they reap from society.

What I am fearful about is that as we strive - and it may be with the best of intentions - to take care of everyone and be "fair" that we are unwittingly (or cyncially I say knowingly) creating a society of entitlement.

Why should I work harder if I will have to give it all away?

Why should I save if I know that when I have nothing the government will be there for me when I have nothing?

Why should I pay my mortage if I know that I will be bailed out?

I fear we are facing a future in which fewer strive to get ahead and more strive to take what they can and give as little as they can.
Soon it appears we will have Reid, Pelosi and Obama calling the shots and thus ensuring our future.
